Eligibility and applying for Medicaid

Medicaid eligibility

Medicaid coverage is open to:

  • People with low income.
  • Pregnant women.
  • Families.
  • Older people.
  • Children.
  • People with disabilities.

Medicaid coverage varies by state. Some states cover any person who meets certain income requirements. Some states have other requirements a person must meet to qualify for Medicaid.

Enrollment in Medicaid is year-round. You can apply for Medicaid at any time. If you qualify, you will be able to start getting benefits right away.

There are several reasons you may qualify for Medicaid:

  • If you have, or your household has, low income
  • If you have recently become pregnant, are pregnant, or had a child
  • If you have a disability

If you apply for Medicaid, you may also be eligible for up to three months of retroactive coverage for unpaid medical expenses, if you would have been eligible for Medicaid during that period.
